Design Engineer – joined August 2012

1. What was it that attracted you to the company?
The opportunity to grow and progress within a rapidly developing company. I joined 3sun Group in August 2012 as a Mechanical Maintenance Apprentice and later changed to a Design and Draughting Apprenticeship in January 2013 after gaining experience within the Engineering Department. I completed my apprenticeship in November 2013 and am now employed as a Design Engineer.

2. What are your highlights to date?
Having my first panel fabrication arrive in the 3sun Group workshop was my biggest highlight. It was great to have something that I created using 3D modelling appear in the workshop and exactly how I had imagined it to be.

3. What skills and experience have you gained during your time here?
I have learnt all about the general design and manufacturing of bespoke hydraulic packages from the tendering stages right up to the build phase.

4. Can you describe a typical day in your role?
It differs greatly from one day to the next; I can spend some days carrying out adhoc support for other engineers, making changes to schematics, creating label schedules or draughting electrical schematics. Other days will be spent solely designing a hydraulic package.

5. How would you describe the culture within 3sun Group?
We have a very friendly culture where everyone is willing to help. 3sun colleagues work well together and it’s a conducive and positive environment to be able to get on with work.

6. What advice would you provide to someone looking to develop a career within the industry?
If you are looking to start out your career in the industry an apprenticeship is invaluable. It gets your foot in the door and allows you to show employers what you are capable of and grow in these respective areas.
